Kufstein has a very special and charming means of payment: Kufstein ducats are available all year round at Kufstein banks, for €10 each, and can be redeemed at many businesses in the fortress city. The history of the ducats is a success story that began in 1993, when they were designed and put into circulation by Kufstein merchants. Demand has increased steadily and over the years an increasing number of ducats has been minted. The design has also been refined several times, for example when the euro was introduced. Since 2009, the ducats have been shiny gold again, are worth 10 euros each and are now accepted as means of payment in almost all Kufstein shops. In 2017, almost 25 years after their introduction, the number of ducats increased again. A further 40,000 coins were minted and there are therefore now 100,000 ducats worth 1,000,000 euros in circulation. The main issuing office for Kufstein ducats is the Sparkasse Kufstein.
