Nikolaus Hagen und Maria Heidegger
Society, politics and the limits of memory
Kufstein from 1950 to 2000
“Edition Kufstein,” published by the City of Kufstein, sheds light on the history of the city in the 20th century. The text and image material in the series is dedicated to important topics that shaped the city and its people over the centuries. In the first volume, specialist authors, who scientifically researched the history of the city as part of the project “Kufstein writes its history,” trace the socio-political, economic and social history, focusing on town planning, music, sport and migration. When viewed as a whole, the volumes of “Edition Kufstein” present a diverse picture, allowing readers both from the region and outside to immerse themselves in Kufstein's history.
Edition Kufstein Volume #2
Gisela Hormayr
Between dictatorship and freedom
Kufstein from 1900 to 1950
In “Edition Kufstein: Between Dictatorship and Freedom,” the historian Gisela Hormayr traces the political history of Kufstein between 1900 and 1950.
The second volume from a history project by the City of Kufstein, which has been running for several years, outlines developments in the city and at the same time gives an overview of how global political events during this period affected Kufstein and its people. Following a stable period at the beginning of the century, the town experienced the effects of the First World War with hunger, economic crises and political terror, and was then affected by direct hostilities in the Second World War. The book deals with the First Republic, its defeat in 1933, the “Anschluss” (connection) with the National Socialist “Third Reich” in Germany, the Second Republic and then a lasting period of peace.

Arnold Klotz
Streets, buildings and squares
Urban development of Kufstein in the 20th century
“Streets, buildings and squares,” the first volume of “Edition Kufstein,” focuses on the history of planning and construction in Kufstein in the 20th century. The former town planner of Innsbruck and Vienna, and vice-rector of the University of Innsbruck, Arnold Klotz, describes the journey from a border town in the Habsburg Empire to a modern town with a lively inner city, educational and cultural facilities, public squares, and residential and commercial buildings. Recent developments in the 21st century and a look to the future complete the picture of a modern city in the heart of Europe.
